$260 plus $25
S&H
This banjo had the typical, Supertone, cheesy, light
tension hoop. I replaced it with a 1/4"x1/2" brass hoop. I
think that the heavy tension hoop adds to the tone.
Original fingerboard, I put in
a brass-floored frailing scoop.
Original friction-type pegs. These have the
milk-white, not ivoroid, button.
Head rests on wood. Pot is all wood, no cladding, no tone ring.
DIMENSIONS:
Head dia. = 10 1/2 in.,
16 hooks. Nuts are a mixture, most are old but do not match.
Scale length 26 1/2
in.
String span @ nut=1
in
String span @ heel
= 1 5/8 in.
Bridge = ~ 1/2 in. tall
SETUP:
* action @ scoop
= 1/2 in.
* action @ octave =
3/16 in.
FLAWS:
Some non-original shoes, nuts &
hooks.
Uses original friction
tuners....not really a flaw, but takes some getting used to if you've never
used them. These are a little bit less precise than geared tuners, and
take more attention than geared tuners. The banjo stays in tune.
Normal scuffing due to age.
Overall the finish is fair, a little worn @ the left hand position.
ON THE PLUS SIDE:
Good volume & tone,
nice playability, overall in good shape. I like Supertone's place
in history as a maker of banjos for the masses - a lot of people played
these instruments. I also tend to replace the original tension hoops
on these banjos because a) it seems to make a nice difference in the tone
and b) they're typically pretty rusty when I get the banjo.
